EWANRIGG LAUNCHES TALLEST SUNFLOWER COMPETITION
Launched by The Ewanrigg Local Trust (ELT) and supported by the Big Local Lottery Fund, the competition will become an annual event and this year’s winner will pass their trophy on to their successor in 2015!
The competition is open to all Ewanrigg residents and free seeds are available from the local shops and community buildings in Ewanrigg. The only rule is that entrants must use the seeds provided by the competition organisers. Anyone wanting to take part needs to pick up their seeds and register their details with the ELT by email, phone or by dropping into the Community centre. Entries will be judged in August and prizes will be awarded to the tallest sunflowers. There are categories for under 5s, ages 5-11 years; ages 12-25 years; 25 years and over and 60 years and over. Prizes will include a trophy and gardening vouchers.
How to plant your seed:
Plant your seed in April or May. Push your seed about 1 inch (1 inch = approx. half the size of an adult thumb) directly into the soil. Ideally plant them outside but you can plant them inside in a pot until they outgrow it.
Ideally, plant them
- In moist well-drained soil
- Where they are most likely to get sunshine
- Next to a fence or by the house and out of the wind
- Approximately 15 cm apart (If you are growing several seeds)
Beverley Steele, Youth Officer for the Ewanrigg Local Trust said, “From great grandparents to great grandchildren, everyone can have a go and enter our simple competition. This is a brilliant opportunity for all the residents of Ewanrigg to get involved, show off their gardening skills and have some fun.”
